Twilight star, Nikki Reed shares heartfelt tribute to her midwives
“I have this burning desire to highlight the value of midwifery care, and showcase the incredible wisdom that these women bring to the birth space and beyond.“
Earlier this month, Twilight stars Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder welcomed their second child, a sweet baby boy. The married couple already share a daughter, 6yo Bodhi Soleil Reed Somerhalder.
Famously private about her relationship and her children, 35yo Nikki took to her Instagram stories on Thursday last week to announce that she and the 44yo The Vampire Diaries star had welcomed their son, writing: “I have very strong boundaries with social media, especially when it comes to children and what I choose to put out into the world. I wanted to share first so I can say thank you in advance for honoring those boundaries and for sending positivity, kindness and LOVE.”
At the time the proud new mum then thanked her medical team “for helping to gently guide this sweet boy into the world” and now she is again highlighting how important her midwives were in her journey to motherhood the second time around.
Inspired after sharing her birth story on the @themotherdazepodcast alongside Aussie star Teresa Palmer, Nikki shared an incredible series of birth images to Instagram as she felt “this burning desire to highlight the value of midwifery care”.
“My goodness, birth is just so damn beautiful,”
Following her urge to “showcase the incredible wisdom that these women bring to the birth space and beyond” Nikki wanted to highlight just how important the role midwives play during the “postpartum period” where “so many women are left without support”.
She penned: “With a culture that doesn’t nurture new mamas in the way it should and a healthcare system that doesn’t value the need for PP care, it is time to create a shift.”
For new mum Nikki, it’s midwives who “understand this gap in a way most do not.”
Praising her own midwife, @lamidwifeabby, the new mum shared: “When I think back at my birth, I cannot help but feel an almost indescribable love for the care I was given. They quite literally held me up when my body needed support, and have held me in every moment of uncertainty since.
“My goodness, birth is just so damn beautiful, and I am eternally grateful for the incredible birth workers out there who hold the hands and hearts of women as they bring their babies into the world. Abby you are such a gift. And @birthwhisperer , you are magic.”
Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder had a whirlwind start to their romance, first linked in 2014, and married by 2015. The famously private pair might be part of the Hollywood elite, but prefer their quiet life on the farm with their family.
They might not share too much about their lives, but occasionally fans get a glimpse with the pair often expressing their love for one another in sweet Instagram tributes.
Excited for the arrival of his son, Ian shared a sweet tribute to Nikki, writing: “All I’ve ever wanted from the time I was a young boy was to have a big family. Thank you Nik for giving me that gift. ROUND TWO HERE WE GO!!!!!”
While speaking to reporters on the red carpet at the 3rd annual Noble Awards, where they were both honoured for their respective work with charities, the pair admitted that they rarely fight. Except for one thing … the colour of Ian’s eyes. “He thinks his eyes are ocean blue and I think they’re aqua,” Nikki joked.
One thing that is important to the couple is leaving the world a better place.
“We do wake up in the morning and talk about those things,” Nikki said. “That’s the revelation that I’ve had in the last couple of years is understanding my role in this, and that one individual can actually do something, can change the world.”
She continued, “And so what’s actually I think nurtured this long friendship that we’ve had is that we are passionate about similar things.”
