Dana retires as a professional dancer

Pictured on stage, surrounded by her family, for her final performance of Don Quixote in September, 2023, Dana writes an emotional post about her decision to retire from professional dancing.

“A world away from this very beautiful moment but now in a world of many beautiful moments with family,” she begins.

“Even with the best of preparations and understanding of what this retirement transition could look and feel like, it still amazes me how much you could never be prepared for. Just like new parenthood when you have read all the books, bought all the things, readied yourself, nothing prepares you for the becoming a parent and what that journey truly looks like. Because no one has walked that journey before, it’s your journey to take. Only you can walk in those shoes.”

She continues: “I’ve watched many dancers walk away from stage in a variety of ways, some with a whole world laid out and some with no plans at all. I’ve watched in awe and curiosity about this important transition and prepared myself as best I could. And yet of course, like a new little baby or a new mother, it’s a wobbly course of learning and discovery. There’s teething problems, new habits and patterns to establish. That feeling of being lost and not knowing the way forward, wondering where the way is.

“But then equally, the breakthrough moments, much simpler and quieter than those moments on stage, take my breath away. Very much grateful for all that came before today, and the tomorrow’s that await us all. And of course the moments right there in between where I find myself right now.”

“I could not walk this parenting life without you”

Dana penned a touching post to celebrate her husband’s 38th birthday.

“Lachy, we count all the stars in all the galaxies that you are ours, the best daddy in the whole universe. You are a living example of endless love, kindness, and understanding. You are a tireless source of hilarity, joy and FUN! No one makes us laugh like you do, and that you do all day long.”

She continues: “You give everything to your family, every spare second is devoted to your children and I, no matter what the day, the weather, what state or country we are all in, you are always wholeheartedly all in.

“I could not walk this parenting life without you, you are my quietest but greatest teacher. People often ask me how I have done so much in recent years, and the answer is you. It’s always been YOU, beautiful loving YOU.

“Daddy, we adore you and we learn from you so much how to be better people every single day. Jasper, Lulu and Lottie have the most beautiful role model in you. You are so special and we love you always always always, ever ever ever @lachy_wiggle 💜”

The newlyweds shared a selection of stunning wedding photos to their Instagram pages on Sunday 20 November, 2022.

Lachy shared the special meaning behind incorporating a rainbow into their special day. Lulu and Lottie can be seen holding rainbow streamers.

At the start of our relationship and only after meeting Jasper twice, one night while @dana_stephensen was putting him to bed he looked up and said ‘mummy, your colours have changed!’ 💜 He was three at the time and ever since that beautiful moment, our little family has had a rainbow colour theme running through everything we do. 🌈”

The family of five grace the cover of Sunday Life magazine

Last Christmas, Dana thought she had hung up her pointe shoes for good. But 12 months later she is out of the newborn bubble and returning to the stage as part of the Australian Ballet’s (@ausballet) Celebration Gala.

“Dana’s mum and I watched Dana dance with the girls in her tummy in her last performance before going on leave,” says Lachy. “To even think about sitting in the audience when the curtain opens to see Dana dance again, I’m just so happy for her.”

For Christmas Lachy, Dana and their three children plan on being back home with their families, “to switch off and just relax, especially after the anxieties of the last two years.”

While Lachy shared some behind-the-scenes snaps to Instagram, Dana wrote a heartfelt messgae to Instagram about her return to ballet:

“Thank you to all the people and there were many in all parts of my world, who deeply believed how much I needed to dance again, well before I had that understanding and realisation myself. You gave me fresh air to breathe, time to heal and gave my children a mother who was alive again by doing so. A gift I will always be so grateful for. Today was for all of you.”

In an emotional post Dana opens up about experiencing postnatal depression and anxiety

Alongside a sweet photo of Lola and Lottie, Dana shares an insight into her difficult past year.

“I can think of quite a few times when I’ve felt under pressure – Opening nights, World premieres, going on last minute or for a different spot you learned during interval all to the other side,” she begins.

“Giving birth the first time, a twin pregnancy, giving birth to twins, most of the past year really.”

She continues: “If this past year hasn’t taught me what nerves of steel are, I don’t know what could. But the other truth is, I feel so humbled to be able to say now, that I wouldn’t change it for the world. Chaos and all. The wisdom of time and hindsight.

“The reality is for much of this first year, I was not able to cope with managing the girls alone. People close to me will say I coped extremely well under unprecedented circumstances, but my internal experience felt like one of failure. The unique challenges of twins were so overwhelming, the sleep deprivation so intense, the physical and emotional toll of tandem breastfeeding was beyond exhausting.

“Very early on I was diagnosed with severe postnatal depression and anxiety. Naturally, this altered the lens through which I was seeing the world and my capabilities, not to mention the guilt and shame that comes with feeling these truly awful feelings when it “should” be the happiest time of your life.

“I look back and remember happier moments amongst the struggles. I’m grateful for the photos Lachy took of me with the girls to remind me that I was there every moment with them, doing my best and loving them and caring for them through it all and on half an hour’s sleep.

“My mum flew into multiple lockdowns to help us and truly saved me. She stayed up for all the night feeds, she was a 2nd mum to them. The constant choosing between twins as a mother is so counter-intuitive it breaks your heart every single time, it still does.”

Dana ends the post, writing:

“But tonight at bedtime when all they want is Mummy and it’s only me, I could actually trust that I could handle it. There are still more tears than I would like, my heart still races. My nerves on edge. But I manage. It’s taken time and tears to get here, I want other mums who are struggling to know that. Time and the right support are everything in helping you be the mother you know you can be.”

The twins celebrate an important milestone

And just like that (well, for us anyway!), Lola and Lottie are six months old.

Dana Stephensen marked the milestone event with a sweet post to Instagram which gives an insight into what life has been like for this mama of twins.

“6 months 💕 6 months of snuggles and kisses, hair pulling, so many sleepless nights and weary eyes, so much learning and growing, so many feeds in the pillow throne, constant change and learning to surrender each day to the chaos that is raising two very different little humans at the same time,” she writes.

“These little girls are teaching me so much – to accept that each day is different, to accept imperfection (it’s really ok!), to enjoy the small wins (hooray a real nap!), to accept help and support and boy I’ve needed it, to slow down and be in the moment, and to be patient when everything feels like it’s falling apart,” she continues.

“Raising twins is a rollercoaster ride!

“By far being a twin mum is the hardest thing I’ve done, without a doubt. But as I settle them yet again for sleep wondering what I could be doing better or obsessing over the minor details, I hold their little hands, I know I’m their home and I remember the privilege it is to be their mummy. And one day we will all sleep again… hopefully!”

This newborn shoot is STUNNING!

Lachy and Dana have shared one of the precious images from a professional newborn shoot which was held when Lulu and Lottie were only weeks old.

Dana shared the images to Instagram and in the caption wrote:

“Life with newborn twins is brimming full but we already can’t imagine life without them in our arms. This is just one of so many beautiful images captured by @bridgetwoodphotography when Lulu and Lottie were barely weeks old and already we have all grown and learned so much together in that time. It was so precious to stop and breathe in these moments and to now have such special photographs before life with twins really took off.”

Dana went on to thank everyone for all their love, support and well wishes.

“I also wanted to take a moment to say thank you to the people who have held us in their love and care, supported us near and far, our families and loved ones, and for every twin mama who has so generously shared pieces of advice and words of encouragement as we navigate this whole new world with our girls. I am grateful to every single one of you.”

Speaking of life with multiples, Dana says it is hectic.

“It’s certainly very full, busy, relentless and overwhelming at times and I have utmost respect to any multiple parents out there!”

Dana also gives a shout-out to her fiancé, Lachy.
