"It’s messy and it’s beautiful and there’s so much love to go around"

When it comes to saving the planet and making it a better place for our children, actress Hilary Duff is all over it.

The mum-of-two, who first rose to fame in the Disney Channel series, Lizzie McGuire has appeared on the cover of American magazine, Parents and can be seen cuddling up to her seven-year-old son, Luca and 16-month-old-daughter, Banks.

In a behind-the-scenes video from the cover shoot, the star of Younger, describes motherhood as the “greatest joy of my whole entire life” and calls the shift of going from one to two children as both “the best” and “mayhem”.

“It’s messy and it’s beautiful and there’s so much love to go around and so much laughter that I’m really grateful for it every day,” says Hilary, 32.

Appearing on the magazine for their Mother Earth issue, Hilary shares how her son is focussed on making the world a better place. Hilary says when she and Luca saw a video of a turtle getting a straw pulled out of its nose, she began using more environmentally-friendly alternatives like silicone straws and reusable cups.

“All of a sudden, we knew what straws do to animals and the ocean.”

“About three months ago, we stopped buying zip-top plastic bags,” she said, replacing them with glass containers and silicone bags.

“At first, washing and prepping one more thing seems impossible, but it only takes a little extra time, and it makes a difference.”

“The more we dive into living cleaner, the more things come to our attention. At first, saving the environment sounds scary and overwhelming, but as we implement new rules, it becomes easier and easier.”

“We’re explaining to Luca why we do all this, and he’s getting more involved,” she added. “And honestly, he gets a little heartbroken. It’s sad.”

The star of Younger shares son Luca with ex-husband, Mike Comrie and she welcomed daughter, Banks with singer, songwriter, DJ and record producer, Matthew Koma in 2018.

Hilary and Matthew then tied the knot on December 21, 2019 in an intimate wedding ceremony at their Los Angeles home.

Dressed in a stunning Jenny Packham gown, Hilary made a sweet tribute to her children by having Luca and Banks’ initials embroidered, along with hers and Matthew’s, on the inside of the dress.

“They’re a part of our ceremony and obviously, the biggest part of our life,” Hilary told Vogue magazine.
