We’ve found the secret to a relaxing holiday with kids.

A family cruise can be the ultimate stress-free getaway with a bit of planning! Firstly, pick a cruise ship that’s family-friendly to make sure everyone has a great time.

Then, keep the kids entertained with loads of on board activities. Think waterslides, putt-putt golf, world-class shows, and, of course, the ultimate sanity saver for parents: the Kids’ Club

My daughter and I recently set sail on the Carnival Splendor ‘Grinchmas in July’ cruise from Sydney to Queensland’s Moreton Island. It was a trip we will remember forever and the perfect example of a stress-free holiday.

Right from the start, we were swept up in the festive spirit. Christmas carols were playing as we walked into the grand lobby, that was decked out with decorations, a towering Christmas tree, and a huge Grinchmas banner.

We had only been on board for a couple of hours but already I knew this trip was going be filled with core memories that would stick with my daughter and I forever.

As a first-time cruiser, I’ve gathered some tips for a stress-free family cruise. Here’s how to make your trip smooth sailing…

How to plan a stress-free family cruise

1. How to choose the right family cruise

Start by picking a cruise line known for its family-friendly features, like kids’ clubs and fun activities. Check the itinerary to ensure it includes destinations everyone will enjoy and explore the ship’s amenities, from pools and splash parks to family-friendly dining.

Choose cabins that offer enough space for everyone, and read reviews or ask for recommendations to find the best fit.

2. Keep the kids entertained on a cruise with plenty of activities

Travelling with little ones can be challenging, but a family cruise like Carnival Splendor ensures the holiday is fun and engaging for everyone.

With attractions like waterslides, basketball courts, putt-putt golf, arts and crafts, and entertaining games hosted by the on board entertainment team, there’s always something exciting for kids to do.

Carnival Splendor’s ‘Grinchmas in July’ sailings bring extra festive fun to the cruise. My daughter loved the special appearances by the Grinch and the themed events, such as the Seuss-a-palooza Parade. The Grinchmas theme also gave us the perfect excuse to dress up in our festive gear.

For adults, the ship offers a variety of options, including bars and pubs, nightclubs, a casino, and comedy shows. This way, while the kids are having the time of their lives, adults can enjoy their own fun on board too.

3. Check out the slides and swimming pools

If your kids are obsessed with swimming and slides, they’ll be in paradise on the Carnival Splendor. The ship is packed with pools, including a midship pool with a retractable roof that ensures every day is a perfect pool day.

Up on the top deck, there are a variety of slides and a splash park, so there’s plenty of water fun to keep your little fish entertained.

4. Meal-planning made easy with all the dining options

With a range of dining options on board the Carnival Splendor, families can find something to satisfy even the pickiest eaters.

For lunch, enjoy tasty burgers at Guy’s Burger Joint or classic Spaghetti and Meatballs at Cucina Del Capitano.

Don’t miss the self-serve ice cream station, which is a hit with all ages, though there are also plenty of fresh fruit and healthier options available.

For a special treat, dine at Fahrenheit 555, an elegant restaurant located at the top of the ship.

During our Grinchmas in July cruise, we loved the ‘Thing 1 and Thing 2 Birthday Breakfast,’ featuring fun menu items like Grinch’s green pancakes and Green Eggs and Ham, and special guest appearances from Dr. Seuss characters.

5. Kids’ Club for the win!

The best cruises for kids (and parents!) feature exceptional Kids Clubs, and Carnival Splendor delivers with its age-based options packed full of fun activities.

For younger ones, Camp Ocean caters to ages 2 to 11 while teens aged 12 to 14 can head to Circle C, where they can socialise, play video games, and watch outdoor movies.

Older kids, aged 15 to 17, have Club 02, a space dedicated to sports, karaoke, and music.

And once the kids are taken off your hands, you can escape for some much-needed downtime in the adults-only areas.

6. Relax in the kid-free, adults-only areas

While the kids are being looked after at Kids’ Club, parents can enjoy doing absolutely nothing but relaxing by the pool at the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat.

Or, if you’re looking to really relax, head to Cloud 9 Spa for a soothing massage or rejuvenating facial, all while soaking in stunning ocean views. Aaaah… bliss.

7. Stress-free shore excursions

A stand-out memory on our cruise was our day trip to Queensland’s Moreton Island. We had the option to choose from a range of shore excursions, from helicopter rides to kayaking. Or, if you preferred, you could just relax on the beach and explore the island at your own pace.

For me, snorkelling was a must-do. Just a heads-up, the water was chilly in July, even with a wetsuit but Moreton Island is one of Australia’s best snorkeling spots, so the goosebumps were worth it!

The snorkeling area is home to 15 shipwrecks, scuttled by the Queensland Government between 1963 and 1984 to create safe anchorage for small boats.

These wrecks have turned into a vibrant reef, full of coral and over 200 species of tropical fish and marine life. My top tip: Keep an eye out for sea turtles!

8. Pack and travel smart on a family cruise

To make sure you have everything you need, start by listing the essentials you use at home and if you’re travelling with babies or toddlers, don’t forget items like nappies, baby food, baby wipes, and any medications.

For the first day of your cruise, pack a carry-on with easy-to-access essentials, including:

  • Important travel documents (passports, birth certificates, visas)
  • A change of clothes
  • Necessities for babies and toddlers
  • Sunscreen and personal toiletries

For shore excursions, use a carry-on bag or backpack that fits all your gear.

Also, don’t forget to include warm winter clothing like jumpers and jackets, as it can get chilly out at sea.

Be sure to pack multiple pairs of swimmers for everyone – to avoid wearing wet ones.

And if you’re cruising during winter, think about packing a wetsuit for extra warmth while enjoying the waterslides, pool, and ocean. It’ll help keep everyone comfy and make the most of all the fun activities both on board and on shore.
