And he’s off!

In a podcast with Steph Smith, the WAFL star revealed that when Ahi was placed on her chest, after 24 hours of labour, he wasn’t breathing and she immediately knew something was wrong.

“I didn’t even try to embrace him or enjoy it, I just like ‘Fix it!’” she told the host. “I was looking over at them, working on him at the table. Then I was watching Bell, and Bell was crying.”

“I was on a bed, in stirrups, completely naked. Cut, blood everywhere. But all I could think about in that moment was, save him”

Moana went on to say that once she knew he was ok, she was completely overwhelmed and asked Bell to take him as she was “empty to life”.

Moana and Isabella are parents to two-year-old Svea and eight-month-old, Ahi.

As many parents would agree, watching your baby learns to walk is a huge rite of passage as it’s a sign your baby is entering toddlerhood.

Babies usually start walking between eight to 18 months old.

Before taking their first steps, they will usually have been crawling – from around the six to 13 month mark – and then pulling themselves up to stand, usually around the ages of nine and 12 months.

Accoring to Raising Children, walking starts to develop as soon as children learn to stand up. It continues to develop as children’s muscles, bones and joints strengthen and mature, their gross motor skills and coordination improve through practice, and they gain confidence.

Children develop the skills for walking at various ages. Children’s walking skills develop more or less quickly too. But typically developing children usually gain these skills in the same order, says Raising Children:

  • By about 9 months, some children might take their first steps with someone holding their hands.
  • By about 12 months, some children might be able to stand alone, sidestep around furniture, and walk unaided with their legs wide apart.
  • By about 15 months, some children might take uneven steps and walk with ‘flat feet’. Children might also walk by pushing toy barrows, carts, trolleys and so on.
  • By about 18 months, most children are walking well with their legs closer together. They can start and stop easily. They might also be starting to go up stairs or run.

Ahi shows of his cheeky smile.

Parents are often concerned about when their child learns to walk and if they fall into the category of either being an ‘early’ or ‘late’ walker, however according to the World Health Organization, children can begin to walk unaided any time between eight and 18 months, and still be classified within the “typical” range.

Moana and Isabella’s son, Ahi sits in the “typical” walking range at eight months old.

If you are concerned about your child’s development milestones, please see your GP or your family health nurse.
