New mum Jennifer Lawrence reveals that she suffered two, very different, miscarriages
“It’s so scary to talk about motherhood. Only because it’s so different for everybody ..."
The fact that Jennifer Lawrence lays low on socials and rarely does in depth interviews means that we don’t get often get a warts’n all view into her life. However, ahead of the premiere of her film Causeway, the Hunger Games star is finally giving fans a glimpse into her new life as a mother.
In a new interview, the 32yo Oscar-winning actor spoke of marriage to art gallerist husband, Cooke Maroney and their life as a family of three after welcoming son, Cy in February.
The proud new mum also admitted that her road to motherhood was not a straight line. Jennifer explained that she had her first miscarriage in her early 20s during a pregnancy that she had “one hundred percent” intended to get an abortion for.
Tragically she suffered another loss more recently while shooting Don’t Look Up in late 2020/early 2021 in a pregnancy that she told Vogue Magazine she very much wanted.
Jennifer Lawrence welcomed her first child, son Cy in February 2022.
In the in-depth interview, the American Hustle star highlighted that those experiences shaped her opinions on the United States Supreme Court overturning of Roe v. Wade, ending women’s constitutional right to an abortion
“I remember a million times thinking about it while I was pregnant,” Jennifer told Vogue.
“Thinking about the things that were happening to my body. And I had a great pregnancy. I had a very fortunate pregnancy.
“But every single second of my life was different. And it would occur to me sometimes: What if I was forced to do this?”
“The morning after I gave birth, I felt like my whole life had started over.”
“It’s so scary to talk about motherhood,” she told Vogue.
“Only because it’s so different for everybody. If I say, It was amazing from the start, some people will think, It wasn’t amazing for me at first, and feel bad. Fortunately I have so many girlfriends who were honest. Who were like, It’s scary. You might not connect right away. You might not fall in love right away.”
Despite being worried about the connection and wondering if “maybe I’ll love him as much as my cat?” the new mum need not have been concerned. The Red Sparrow star said: “The morning after I gave birth, I felt like my whole life had started over. Like, Now is day one of my life.”
Causeway is set to drop in theatres and on Apple TV+ “later this year”, per Deadline.
It was not only Roe v. Wade that escalated her worries about her son’s future, the star also used the interview to speak out on gun violence in schools.
“I’m raising a little boy who is going to go to school one day. Guns are the number-one cause of death for children in the United States. And people are still voting for politicians who receive money from the NRA,” she said.
“It blows my mind. I mean if Sandy Hook didn’t change anything? We as a nation just went, Okay! We are allowing our children to lay down their lives for our right to a second amendment that was written over 200 years ago.”
She joked that her baby boy is her little voodoo doll, because everything that hurts him hurts her.
“I mean the euphoria of Cy is just—Jesus, it’s impossible,” she said. “I always tell him, I love you so much it’s impossible.”
