Beach Suites Byron Bay review: An escape that caters for kids – and parents too
Skye Swan and her family stayed at Beach Suites Byron Bay and found that travelling with little ones doesn’t have to be difficult.
What distinguishes a normal hotel from a kid-friendly one? It’s in the little touches that parents appreciate the most.
Think a guest laundry and willing staff to help you get through the never-ending pile, sand toys and umbrellas to use at the beach, pushbikes of all sizes so you can easily get around to see the sights, and a full-sized coffee machine with real milk from a local dairy.
At Beach Suites Byron Bay, General Manager Helen has thought of everything you might need – plus some! – to ensure your stay with children is as enjoyable and easy as can be.
“We try to be the one percenters – always providing the little extras,” she told us. “It’s so easy to do and adds to the overall experience for our guests. I’m quite particular with what I want from a hotel so those are the kinds of things I’ve introduced here. I also had three kids under three at one point so I understand what parents need. The only extra thing you pay for here is the mini-bar and we price that really reasonably.”
Stay a stone’s throw from the beach and shops
Beach Suites Byron Bay has been providing luxury beachside accommodation with exceptional service to travellers for many years. There are 10 studio suites and four penthouse apartments, all located a stone’s throw from Main Beach.
The Garden Studios are incredibly spacious, with one thoughtfully configured for disable use and another with an extra bedroom. Then there are the Beachfront Studios. Most of these have a private plunge pool to enjoy.
Our pick though, if you really want a stay to remember, is to book one of the four Penthouse apartments. There are two-bed and three-bed suites available, each with a huge deck, ocean views, a rooftop lap pool, laundrette and a spa bath.
Here’s a hot tip. Tee up a fruit-filled breakfast box from The Luxury Table (just chat to the team at reception to help organise it), climb the stairs to the heated rooftop pool, and spend some of the early hours soaking up the morning sun. Slip in and out of the warm pool water while you chow down on fresh fruit and pastries, all the while taking in the stunning view of Julian Rocks out to sea. If you’re lucky you might even spy a whale like we did during our early October travels.
All rooms have a barbecue and kitchenette facilities with a full-sized fridge and freezer. This makes it easy for those days when eating in and putting the kids to bed early sounds more appealing than going out to a restaurant.
If you do decide to venture out though, you’re walking distance from the main strip of eating places and shops. And boy, does Byron Bay have plenty to choose from. According to locals, current top picks include Bang Bang and The Cyprus Tree. Then for morning coffee and pastries, Sunday Sustainable Bakery is the go-to. Be warned though, it gets very busy so get there early.
Beach Suites Byron Bay is pet friendly too
In addition to being a family friendly accommodation option, guests can also bring their furry friends. Dogs all get a beautiful big soft bed and blanket, dog bowls and a feeding mat to use, plus some locally made doggy treats to top things off.
A sustainable approach
If you know anything about Byron Bay, you’ll know that locals embrace environmental sustainability. Beach Suites Byron Bay does too. You’ll find reusable coffee cups in your room, two Tesla car charges in the carpark, and pushbikes and helmets to help you get around. “We even had a little girl learn to ride for the first at Beach Suites,” Helen told us enthusiastically.
The team loves to support local businesses where it can too. There’s Zentveld’s coffee beans from the Hinterland to use in your room, Byron Bay Cookie Company treats in the cupboard, and Brookfarm macadamias and muesli on the kitchen countertop. Even the milk in the fridge is locally sourced. According to Helen, “the area is amazing for food – it’s like a big salad bowl with all the volcanic soil in the hinterland.”
A day out in Byron Bay
There are plenty of activities for families to do in Byron Bay:
- The walk to Cape Byron Lighthouse is iconic. Start the day early to avoid some of the busyness – and be prepared to sweat. It is pram accessible but some patches are pretty bumpy and steep. Our toddler slept through the hard slog in the pram, waking up at the top to enjoy the uninterrupted views of the northern NSW coastline. Lucky kid!
- Jump aboard the solar-powered Byron Bay Train at the Byron Town Centre stop. The 1949 heritage train has been beautifully restored and is a world first, using only the sun’s energy to power it. Once you arrive at your destination, North Beach, enjoy a meal at North Byron Hotel or walk 15 minutes to Stone and Wood Brewery.
- Spend a morning playing on the sand and frolicking in the sea. Main Beach is just across the road from Beach Suites Byron Bay so you can easily duck back to your accommodation at any time. Ask the hotel’s reception for some sand toys, beach umbrellas and chairs to borrow, then stroll over and soak up the sun.
- Borrow some bikes and ride the seven kilometres from Beach Suites Byron Bay to The Farm. This is a great spot for the kids to explore with lots of space to run around and animals to meet. Book a picnic basket if your kids can’t ever sit still, or dine in at Three Blue Ducks which has a paddock-to-plate ethos.
More than a hotel, it’s an experience
At Beach Suites Byron Bay, it’s the little touches that make all the difference. You can even take the scent of your holiday home with you to let the experience linger a little longer. Purchase a candle in the hotel’s signature scent (a delicious sweet coconut and lime aroma) or buy full-size versions of the hair and skin care products you’ve been using throughout your stay.
If your little one falls in love with the teddy bear sitting in your room, they’re welcome to take that home with them too.
“At Beach Suites, we offer more than a hotel,” Helen comments. “Our staff are ambassadors for the region; it’s all about creating an amazing experience for our guests.”
