What to consider when choosing a school drink bottle
As you’ve moved through the toddler years, you’ll already be aware of the importance of keeping busy little bodies and minds hydrated. No doubt you’ve probably cycled through a few drink bottle options already as you figure out which one works best for you. You can expect more of the same as you move into the school years.
The following tips will help you make a choice that will see you through the school year … unless they leave it on the bus, which. let’s face it, is highly likely.
- Choose a drink bottle that is easy for your child to identify, there’s a very good chance that it is going to be left out on the playground more than once! Make sure their name is clearly visible.
- For younger children, make sure that they can easily open and close their drink bottle and that the functionality of any moving parts is easy for them to operate.
- Many of the steel bottles come in super large sizes, which, once filled, are heavy for little ones to trudge around all day. Consider the weight of the bottle once filled when choosing the size.
- If your child prefers their water to be icy cold, make sure you are choosing a bottle with insulation. Most plastic bottles will quickly warm up to room temperature.
- Take a good look at the quality of the bottle. Does it look like it will last? Do lids look like they will lock in securely to prevent leaks? Is it going to take a battering as those school bags get tossed around?
To straw or not to straw …
For what seems like such a simple design, drink and water bottles are often flawed. The biggest issue being leaking, followed closely by pesky problems caused by mould.
Mould is an issue that tends to arise when using bottles with soft plastic straws that trap moisture (and bacteria) in the tube section. Nobody wants their child drinking through that. While bottles with plastic straws are often suitable for younger children whose parents are operating the drinking vessel for them, they do tend to become problematic for older kids. They become a pain point with many water bottles, as they fall off inside or get lost completely.
Fortunately, many drink bottle options on the market today offer built-in straws, lid alternatives, and leakproof solutions that are much more preferable, lending themselves to a durability that is preferred when being hauled through school and sports.
