Unique and mysterious, these are the baby names that mean "dark" or "dark haired".

While it’s not possible to determine exactly what hair colour your unborn child will have (*raises hand as mother of a random redhead in the mix), you can sometimes make a pretty educated guess based on the hair colour of mum and dad. Remember, the word ‘guess’ is important here, those babies can surprise us!

If you and your partner have dark hair, it’s fairly likely that you’ll have dark haired little ones too. If that’s the case, you’ll adore the baby names that we’ve shared in the gallery below …

Will my child end up with dark hair?

Baby hair colour really comes down to what mix you got in your genetic soup. The hair colour genes that were turned on or off, coming from either side of the family tree, really depends on chance.

What really determines your hair colour is a couple of interesting pigments that are responsible for hair, skin, and eye colouring.

Eumelanin is the pigment responsible for determining if hair is dark. Someone who is blonde will have very little eumelanin, while someone who has larger concentrations of the pigment will end up with brown or dark brown hair.

There is also a subtype eumelanin which is responsible for black hair, and even more interesting … white hair!

The pigment pheomelanin is what gives us red or orange hair. Most of us have a some pheomelanin in our hair, but true redheads (who make up three percent of the population) have little to no eumelanin to go along with that, which is what gives them their unique tones.

If you have auburn or strawberry blonde hair, you have a mix eumelanin and pheomelanin pigments.

Oh and something to remember … your hair colour at birth may not be the hair colour that you end up with! Someone who has light hair throughout childhood may see that darken over time.

Fascinating, right?
