Coronavirus and schools: Parents urged to keep children home and not travel interstate during Easter school holidays
"For some parents that is not possible, so schools will remain open"
Many parents have found the decision on whether or not to send their child to school amidst the coronavirus crisis, now lies with them.
The Prime Minister announced on Sunday, March 22 that schools should remain open based on health advice from the state and federal government.
These guidelines also apply to childcare centres and preschools will also continue to operate as normal.
New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian is urging parents to keep children at home and for only those with no other options to send their child to school. The Premier said 30 per cent of parents are keeping their child home.
“We are encouraging parents to keep their children at home,” she told reporters on Monday morning.
“We appreciate that for some parents that is not possible, so schools will remain open.
“No child will be turned away from school.”

As of this morning, Monday March 23, the guidance as per the state and territories is constantly changing.
Schools in Victoria and ACT are set to close tomorrow on March 24, with the state and territory bringing forward the Easter holiday break.
The ACT’s Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry confirmed Canberra schools will begin pupil-free days from Tuesday “despite statements from the prime minister”.
With the Easter break coming up in a couple of weeks, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has warned it would not be school holidays as usual, and that families are not to travel.
“There will not be trips interstate … there will not be congregating up at the trampoline venue or whatever it happens to be,” he said.
“It won’t be a holiday as anyone has ever known it.”
Mr Morrison says parents need to follow this advice for the health and safety of us all.
“The decisions that parents make, that we all make, over the course of the next few weeks in particular could very seriously determine the trajectory that Australia continues to go on in relation to the coronavirus.”
