Sam Mac shares sweet but hilarious tribute to daughter Margot: “Please never lose that giggle”
The Sunrise weatherman opens up about what fatherhood means to him.
Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac and his partner, Rebecca James when welcomed their first child together in September 2022, naming her Margot Grace McMillan.
Not long after Margot arrived, the new dad opened up to to TV Week about what fatherhood means to him.
“Margot changed everything,” he told the publication.
“I always knew I wanted to be a dad. But I was getting on a bit [in age] and it hadn’t eventuated, so there was a little doubt about whether it would happen. Then I met Bec [they began dating in 2020] and, thankfully, we were both on the same page. It happened pretty quickly but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

To mark Margot’s first birthday, Sam wrote a beautiful letter to his daughter, which he shared on Instagram.
“Dear Margot,” he began. “You’re one year old today! Exactly one year ago, your Mum, our warrior, brought you safely into the world. I cried the first time I laid eyes on you. The magnitude hit me instantly. Forever. I cried because you’d taken us to a new stratosphere of love. & I cried because your mother almost shattered my hand during the failed epidural(s).”
He continued: “What a year. You’ve been to Paris, London, St Tropez & even Venice for your Uncles Wedding. You joined me on a ‘work’ trip to Disneyland in LA & you’ve enjoyed multiple trips to Adelaide & Melbourne to see your grandparents. 21 flights in your first year! We promise this has nothing to do with the fact that kids under 2 travel free 😉”
The doting dad went onto list all the adorable things he does to make his daughter laugh.
“Every single day without fail you make us laugh. & making YOU laugh is our favourite. No better sound on the planet. Things that make you laugh include;
– Dobby
– Me pretending to eat your food via FaceTime
– Mum crawling behind you in the kitchen maniacally shouting “I’m gonna get you, I’m gonna get you”
– Peekaboo with the Shutters / Doona
– Letting you shove anything into my mouth (ie Socks, Teddy’s, & even Nappies (clean)).”
Sam finished the post: “We are so proud of you Margot, our gorgeous girl. You can do & be anything you want. I have a feeling you will. & we’ll always be your number 1 fans. Happy Birthday! & thank you for bringing the magic into our lives 🤍”
It wasn’t the first time Sam had penned a touching letter to his daughter. In March 2023, he shared a lengthy post marking six months since she was born.
Sprinkling the letter with touches of humour, the television presenter described the joy he has watching his daughter grow up.
When he and Rebecca welcomed their baby girl into the world on September 11, 2022, he says the little one brought “magic” into their lives.
“Dear Margot, You’re 6 months old today!” the letter begins.
“Watching you achieve each little milestone is bringing such immense joy to your Mum & I. The first time you rolled over, first time holding the bottle, first time sitting unassisted & my personal favourite, your first giggle. There’s no better sound in the world. Please never lose that giggle.”
The Sunrise presenter continues: “I promise to continue my flabbergasted fly impression to bring it on. Some babies are satisfied with raspberries to prompt the lolz, but you require something much more strenuous (& potentially heart attack inducing) from your parents. I respect that.”
Giving us a glimpse into Margot’s personality, Sam Mac writes:
“Your little personality is starting to shine through. You’re sweet & gentle. Sometimes shy. But also loud & rambunctious when we aren’t fulfilling your demands (of which there’s many) #Diva“
The father-of-one finished the letter on a touching but hilarious note:
“I love singing to you in the bath, I love eating your feet, & I love watching you fall asleep on my chest: If I said these things to an adult I’d sound like a serial killer, but with you it’s just perfect. & legal. Phew.
“Thank you for bringing the magic to our lives little Margot. Mum & I love you so very very much. Xx.”
