Riley Keough reveals her baby’s name and the special meaning it has to Elvis Presley and her late brother

Riley Keough and husband, Ben Smith-Petersen welcomed their first child via surrogate last August – now, the Daisy Jones and the Six star has finally revealed their daughter’s name and the special connection it has Elvis Presley and to her late brother.

“This is Tupelo,” the 34-year-old new mum, shared with Vanity Fair magazine, before going on to reveal her full name is Tupelo Storm Smith-Petersen.

The name Tupelo is a nod to her grandfather, Elvis Presley as he was born in the Mississippi city of Tupelo.

“It’s funny because we picked her name before the Elvis movie,” Riley told the magazine.

“I was like, ‘This is great because it’s not really a well-known word or name in relation to my family — it’s not like Memphis or something.'”

Tupelo shares the same middle name of Riley’s late brother, Benjamin Storm Keough who passed away in 2020 from suicide.

Opening up to the publication about her decision to choose a surrogate, Riley, who has Lyme disease, said while she could “carry children,” surrogacy was the “best choice for what I had going on physically with the autoimmune stuff.”

Lyme disease is caused by bacteria transmitted in a tick bite. The types of tick that carry the bacteria are not native to Australia and it’s not likely you can catch Lyme disease in Australia.

Riley’s long-awaited announcement of her daughter’s name, came days after she was named the sole trustee of her late mother Lisa Marie Presley’s estate, following a legal dispute with her grandmother, Priscilla Presley.

On the 13th January 2023, the world reeled at the news that Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley had passed away at age 54, leaving behind three children.

During a moving tribute to her late mother at her public memorial service, Riley shared that Lisa Marie had only just become a grandmother.

The memorial service, which was held on 22nd January 2023, at the iconic Graceland Estate in Memphis, Tennessee, saw hundreds of mourners line the streets around the estate to pay their respects to the star.

Riley’s tribute, which was read by her husband Ben Smith-Petersen, revealed that the couple were now parents to a baby girl.

“Thank you for showing me love is the only thing that matters in this life. I hope I can love my daughter the way you loved me, the way you loved my brother and my sisters,” the eulogy read.

The news came as a shock to fans as the tribute marks the first public mention of the baby’s arrival, who is the couple’s first child and Priscilla Presley’s first great-grandchild.

Thirty-four-year-old Riley and Ben met on the set of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2012 and they tied the knot three years later, in an intimate ceremony in Napa, California.

In her tribute, the actress also touchingly described the similarities between her late-mother and herself.

“Thank you for giving me strength, my heart, my empathy, my courage, my sense of humour, my manners, my temper, my wildness, my tenacity. I’m a product of your heart,” she said.
