Kate Hudson shocked her whole family with her ‘strict mother’ parenting style
"I don't negotiate with my kids about certain things."
When you were raised by flower child, Goldie Hawn, one might expect your parenting style to be a little free and easy.
Not so for mum-of-three, Kate Hudson who says everyone was surprised when it turns out she is actually a strict mum herself.
In an interview with PEOPLE the 41-year-old actress says the disciplined way that she raises her children – daughter Rani Rose, 2, and sons Bingham “Bing” Hawn, 9, and Ryder Russell, 16 “came as a surprise to my entire family when I became a mother.”
Strictly fun!
“But it’s the things that I’m strict about,” she tells PEOPLE in the exclusive. “Where I am strict is that there are certain rules that I put down. I don’t negotiate with my kids about certain things.”
The Oscar nominated actor adds: “And what I realised about that is that when you set that standard in your home, you don’t end up in long-winded negotiations. When I say no, it’s done.”
The Almost Famous star says she that discipline follows through into all aspects of her life, including wellness and her parenting, and says that parents “need to create reasonable boundaries [and] draw some lines in the sand so that [children] can test them.”
“And that’s, I think, an important part of their development. How far they can push something,” she continues. “And how you as a parent handle it is a huge part of growing up.”
Adding that she is “very, very strict about manners,” the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days star says that she has no tolerance whatsoever for untruths.
“I have no tolerance for lying,” she shares. “The tiny lies or the big ones.”
And while Kate’s no nonsense approach might seem tough, the Fabletics fitness wear co-founder was quick to add that it doesn’t mean she won’t let her kids make mistakes.
“When it comes to your feelings or emotions … I’m very open, I give my children a lot of space to make mistakes.”
Rani Rose Bingham “Bing” Hawn and Ryder Russell know that mum has no tolerance for fibbing.
While her plate is certainly full with three kids, Kate is not sure if she’s done yet.
Kate and her partner, Danny Fujikawa, welcomed their baby girl, Rani Rose in 2018. Kate also has two sons from previous relationships, Ryder Russell, 16 and Bingham Hawn, eight.
“I don’t know if I’m done yet,” revealed Kate during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Kate’s reason for not knowing if she’s done with having babies is one many mums of toddlers can relate to.
“Right now, Rani’s in that place where you’re like, ‘I want another baby,’” she explained.
“But once she gets like four, five, you’re like, ‘I feel like my life is kinda back a little bit. They’re kind of in a groove.’ There’s, like, a window.”
“When I say no, it’s done.”
While her own parenting style is strict, that doesn’t mean the star thinks it’s for everyone.
“We all need to have an open mind and feel good about what we’re doing and let other people live the way they want to live,” she says.
